Determining the width of chandelier
A walk-in closet is different from other rooms as it has space taken up by the closets from all sides of the room. Therefore, instead of measuring the length and breadth from the walls of the room, the length and breadth from the closets are measured.
Simply measure the length of the room from closet to closet in feet and breadth from closet to closet in feet and add them. The result is the width of the chandelier in inches.
How does width of island affect the width of chandelier to be installed
In most rooms other than walk-in closets wherever there is an island or a table the light fixture is sized such that its width is equal to half the width of table or island underneath. But in walk-in closet the situation is slightly different, in a walk-in closet as the space is already occupied by closeting, the width of the chandelier calculated by adding the length and breadth of the room is the final width for chandelier.
1 – 2 inches here and there are just fine considering that island can either have more width or less width and replacing it with other sizes island in some cases is not possible. The basic principle behind determining width of chandelier is that chandelier should not appear as if it is taking too much space.
How to determine the length of chandelier over island in walk in closet
The length of the chandelier over island in walk-in closet depends on the height of the ceiling. Ideally, a chandelier should hang at a height of 36 inches to 60 inches from the island.
The reason behind placing the chandelier at this much height is that in a walk-in closet clothes are hanged low. Therefore, hanging a chandelier at the same level as them can take one’s attention from the chandelier and make the space look tight.
The chandelier, therefore, must hang above the level of clothes. For a walk-in closet of 8 feet ceilings, chandelier must hang 36 inches from the ceiling. Below is a table of chandelier placement height above walk-in closet with respect to the height of the ceiling.
ceiling height in walk-in closet | distance of chandelier above island |
---|---|
8 feet | 36 inches |
9 feet | 42 inches |
10 feet | 50 inches |
11 feet | 56 inches |
12 feet | 60 inches |
The values can vary slightly depending upon how low the clothes in the closet are hanging. A good rule is to always aim for hanging a chandelier above the level of clothes hanging in closet.
How bright should the chandelier be over walk-in closet ?
A walk-in closet requires bright lights such that one can easily identify a particular set of clothing or other important accessories without mistaking one for another.
According to lighting experts, a visually demanding area requires 600 – 700 lux per square meter which means 56 to 63 lumens per square feet of brightness.
To know the recommended brightness in a walk-in closet, measure the total square feet area of the room (without considering closeting) and multiply that value by 60 the resulting value is the recommended brightness for walk-in closet.
To measure the total square feet area of any room simply multiply the length and breadth of the room in feet and multiply them. The result is the total square feet area.
For example, to calculate the lighting requirement of a walk-in closet that is 10 feet in length and 12 feet in breadth is 7200 lumens. (10 feet × 12 feet = 120 square feet) if one square feet requires 60 lumens then 120 square feet would require 7200 lumens of brightness.
By using this method, the lighting requirement of any size walk-in closet can be easily calculated.
It is also important to note that it is not necessary to get all the light in walk-in closet from only one light source. Also, the chandeliers which provide high illumination are very often big in size which may not be ideal for hanging in every walk-in closet.
Since some walk-in closets require a small-sized chandelier compared to large sized walk in closets. In such case, the lighting code for closets suggests that lights can also be installed as
Surface-mounted or recessed incandescent or LED luminaires with a completely enclosed light source
Surface-mounted or recessed fluorescent luminaires.
Surface-mounted fluorescent or LED luminaires identified as suitable for installation within the closet storage space
410.16 Luminaries in clothes closets
Recessed LED lights can also make the space look bright while adding aesthetics to walk-in closet. The choices for lighting are just numerous.
What type of chandelier is ideal in walk-in closet ?
For a walk-in closet chandeliers with crystal or chandeliers with metal provides very special aesthetics to the walk-in closet. Linear chandeliers should be avoided as they look great only when viewed from a particular side.
A walk-in closet is a place where one moves frequently on all sides while looking for something and eventually notices the chandelier as well. Therefore, round-shaped chandeliers or chandeliers which have more length downwards compared to sidewards width are perfect for walk-in closets.
What to do if power outlet is not centered above the island ?
For a neat look, a hole is required to be made in the ceiling which will solve all the positioning problems however if the hole is not intended to be made then still there are plenty of options to make a chandelier centered.
Attaching a hook where the chandelier should hang and extending the wiring of the chandelier to the length at which the chandelier can easily be hanged in the center while connected from an off-centered power source can solve the offcentered problem
The final result will look as shown in the graphic above. Now a more easy approach to make an off-center chandelier look centered is the readjustment of the island below the power outlet.
This is the quickest solution and does not require new drillings. Let the next step to be performed by an experienced electrician who would connect the wiring of the chandelier with power if you are not sure how to do it perfectly.
Every chandelier has two wires a hot wire and a neutral wire. Sometimes a ground wire is also there which is green. The color of hot and neutral wire can be changed it is, therefore, good to always let the professional do his job.
The electrician would find which wire is hot and which is neutral with the help of a device and then after turning the power off from the main switch will connect the wirings. Just a hook needs to be attached above the island and chandelier is directly hanged over it.
Can two chandeliers be installed over island in walk in closet ?
Installing two chandeliers in a single room be it a walk-in closet is possible and can look good only if their sizing is carefully determined.
After determining the width of chandelier based on the dimensions of the room if the island underneath the chandelier is long >45 inches long, then two chandeliers can be installed over it.
For example, if the island is 50 inches long and the room with closeting is calculated to have 7 feet width and 8 feet length then the chandelier would have a width of 15 inches.
But since, the island is of long size, instead of one 15 inch chandelier two 15 inch chandeliers can be installed over the island having a gap equal to the width of individual chandelier between them in this case which is 15 inches.
